The Flaming Lips have partnered up with Few Spirits to create a Flaming Lips Whiskey. Due in October, Evanston-based Few will release Brainville Rye Whiskey (named for a Flaming Lips song) with a price tag of $124.99.
In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Few founder Paul Hletko said the whiskey will be “a little spicier and more assertive” than the standard Few rye.
“The Flaming Lips do big, bold music, so we’ll try to do a big bold whiskey,” Hletko said.
When speaking to the Chicago Tribune, Hletko said the project came together via Justin Helton, a Knoxville, Tenn., artist who designs visuals for The Lips as well as bands like Phish, The Avett Brothers, My Morning Jacket, Ween and The Black Keys. Helton designed the label with the Lips votiff, but the Flaming Lips did not have direct correlation with this project.
But that’s not what to get excited about. The excited portion of this project is the new whiskey by Few and the fact that the Lips name is attached to the project.
When asked by the Tribune about this project Wayne Coyne said: “Whiskey … it’s such a volatile drink. Upon pouring a drink it’s like accepting that you may become a werewolf … And really … Who doesn’t want to become a werewolf ??? Ha.”
Although there’s a steep price tag, we expect this bottle to be a must have once it is released. Few will release a small batch of 5,000 units and it will primarily be sold in the Chicagoland area, but limited release means once it is gone, it’s gone!
